Cubafriend has been set up to try
to bring people together who have a common interest in helping
improve the lives of Cuban people. Initially this project will be
centred around a village in Holguin Province called Puerta de Vita,
although as the project grows, we hope to reach more villages and
their inhabitants. We hope to attract funds to enable some projects
such as improving school facilities and sports facilities in the
village, but we also need people to offer their services, either by
lending a hand, or by volunteering time and resources of companies
such as couriers or freight carriers to enable some of the resources
to reach their intended targets.
Following my first visit to the village in
October, a few weeks after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike had left many
either homeless, or with homes needing extensive repairs, it became
obvious to me that more help was needed. The children of the village
need basic sports facilities, in order that their lives do not
consist solely of time spent at home, whilst not at school. With this
in mind I made initial enquiries of Sheffield United FC, who have
agreed to provide kits to enable this to happen.
Initial enquiries of a local school have also
proved fruitful. Old Hall Primary School have agreed to create a
program aimed at twinning their school with the primary school in
the village. The headmistress is keen to raise the awareness of her
pupils of the situation the Cuban children face with both their home
and school life.
